# The business impact of platform reliability

> When Nigeria's 2023 cash crisis hit, most payment platforms buckled. A few did not, and the business outcomes told the whole story. Here is what reliability actually means for your bottom line.

In February 2023, Nigeria went through an acute cash crisis following a currency redesign. Most bank and fintech infrastructure could not cope with the sudden surge in transaction volume. Failure rates hit record highs, very few POS transactions went through, and shoppers abandoned purchases in physical stores as card machines failed and bank transfers stalled. The disruption to businesses was immense.

In the middle of this, a few platforms stood out. One of our colleagues describes it this way:

> My personal experience was with Moniepoint POS machines. Their transactions would go through without issues, consistently. At some point I would only use businesses that had their POS machines, and within weeks I noticed more businesses and POS agents switching to Moniepoint.

Opay was another platform that held up under pressure. The pattern was unmistakable: customers and merchants moved to the platforms that worked, which meant more transaction volume, more revenue and a higher valuation. That is the business impact of platform reliability in practice.

## What end users actually experience

From an end user's point of view, reliable platforms share three characteristics:

1. **Transactions succeed** almost every time, without retries or error messages.
2. **Responses are fast.** Under ten seconds for a payment is the baseline expectation.
3. **Issues are communicated.** A status page or an in-app message tells users what is happening so they can decide what to do.

That third point is underrated. Users tolerate downtime far better when they are told about it.

## Defining platform reliability

A platform's reliability is its **availability**, the percentage of time it is operational, combined with quality measures such as latency and error rate. High availability with unacceptable latency is not reliability; the end user needs both.

## The three layers behind a reliable platform

Consistent reliability is never accidental. It takes three layers working together.

### Technology

Follow a typical transaction from start to finish and four components come into play:

- **Application**: the mobile or web interface that starts the transaction.
- **Infrastructure provider**: the cloud platform hosting the front end and back end.
- **Architecture**: the choice and configuration of components such as servers, DNS, databases and load balancers.
- **Observability**: visibility into slowdowns or failures across every layer above.

Each has more depth, but these four are where reliability is built or lost.

### People

Developers, architects and DevOps engineers who understand both the system and the business around it. Technical skill is not enough on its own: the people operating a platform need to treat uptime as a business outcome, not just an engineering metric.

### Process

Release pipelines, incident playbooks and a blameless postmortem culture: the discipline that delivers reliability every day, not just during a crisis.

## A framework for getting started

If you are asking how your own platform can become more reliable, this is the process:

1. Choose reliability metrics that matter to your business.
2. Set objectives for them, and pick the one or two most critical to improve first.
3. Instrument your platform and start measuring.
4. Build a roadmap from where you are to where you want to be, with milestones along the way.
5. Execute, review progress, and adjust.
